As we all know we are facing some touch times with the economy, everyday I read a discouraging article about how hard it is to find jobs and how XY and Z Company just laid off 10 percent of its work force. It is a hard time for most right now especially us Gen Y'ers who have recently graduated from college. Most of us spent the last four years working our butts off to graduate on time to be throw into a workforce we thought would bring numerous opportunities, but we were mistaken. When all actuality we spent $50,000 on a little piece of paper that won't even land us a job paying 30,000!
Among the most recent discouraging articles I read about the unemployment rate, it mentioned how Gen Y'ers are coming out of college and think that jobs should be handed to them on silver platters and that we don't know the value of a dollar. The article proceeds to say that Gen Y'ers didn't have to work through college and are still living off their parents-"we were often pampered and nurtured". Contrary to their beliefs they were highly miss informed. What Gen Yer's are they referring to? And at what college did they conduct this survey? USC? I put myself through college! I worked my butt off in HS to get a scholarship there, then worked my butt off to keep my scholarship and for everything else in between all while trying to gain the experience I would need once I entered the "real" world. Damn right I deserve a job right out the door, diploma fresh in hand. The article also mentions we need to pay our "dues" and work our way up the ladder. I certainly feel I've paid my dues and it is my time to shine! Okay so I don't need to be top executive right through the door, but I also don't feel the need to be at the bottom anymore either.
To be completely honest, I feel more confident about myself because of the work experience I have under my belt rather then my education. College was more of life learning experience of finding out who I was and what I was capable of doing away from home. Sure, I had a fair share of interesting classes but nothing has prepared me more than the hands on experience I was receiving while getting my degree.
Nonetheless it has been a tough time on everyone and I think that it will touch us the deepest because it's our economy to fix, it's our time- we are suppose to be the inventors of new and innovative technologies, we are diverse, independent and empowered.
For those fortunate to have not been effected by this, count your blessings. And those struggling to cope with it "Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done.~ Philippians 4:6"
We will rise and when we do we will be so much more appreciative of what we have and what we accomplished during a time of struggle. Until then don't stop being the "Go getters" we are known to be.
